How Often You Should Actually Clean a Cat Fountain

A fountain you don't clean on schedule can end up worse than the bowl it replaced.

A fountain solves the "cats prefer moving water" problem. It doesn't solve hygiene on its own — that part is still on you, and the schedule matters more than most owners assume.

The weekly baseline

Most fountains need a full disassembly and wash weekly at minimum: pump, reservoir, and any removable components, washed with warm water and a mild dish soap, then rinsed thoroughly. Skipping this is the single most common reason a fountain starts to smell or grow a slippery biofilm along the water line.

Filters run on their own clock

Carbon and foam filters have a shorter working life than the fountain itself, typically 2–4 weeks depending on water hardness and how many cats share it. An old filter doesn't just stop helping — it can start releasing back into the water what it was originally capturing.

Material changes the math

Plastic reservoirs scratch with routine brush-cleaning, and those micro-scratches become permanent grooves that are harder to fully clean each time, even on the same schedule. Stainless steel resists this almost entirely, which is why a steel fountain on the same cleaning schedule as a plastic one tends to stay cleaner longer.

You can top off between full cleanings, but it doesn't replace them. Topping off dilutes what's already building up in the reservoir rather than removing it.

If your fountain's components are dishwasher-safe, it can make the weekly clean much less of a chore — worth checking before you buy if cleaning frequency is a concern.

Not meaningfully. Cleaning frequency is driven by water sitting in the reservoir and filter, not by how often the pump runs. Motion-sensor and always-on fountains need roughly the same cleaning schedule.
